Game On: Game Birds at the Game Fair
As you know, I was in Lincolnshire in May and what
a super time I had! Some of the local women were raising money
for a charity and asked me to come along and talk about cooking
with an Aga which of course I was delighted to do. We had a fun
talk and delicious lunch and then I was on my way back home to
the Isle of Wight. In the car (where I tend to do all my best
thinking) I pondered over all the thousands of women (sorry I
am being sexist here, as I have sat on many committees and indeed
not a man to be found although it has to be said they are jolly
good at putting up the parking signs and taking money on the door)
who give up their time and make food or collect raffle prizes
or lick stamps to send out endless invitations at the risk of
being alienated by their friends and thought how simply marvellous
all charity committee members are. There will be a few of these
gallant women at the Game Fair as well. Most of the people you
see organizing the food theatre or stewarding are unpaid and indispensable.
So the next time a charity invitation hits the mat don’t despair
– think of all the time and effort that has gone into it - smile
and write the cheque willingly!
Recipe:
This recipe was given to me by the St John’s Ambulance
IOW Committee they served it at a fundraising lunch and it was
delicious!
Charity Chicken
Serves 10
5 large chicken breasts poached-cooked in stock
and wine – cut into chunks
500ml fromage frais
500ml mayonnaise
1 head celery, thinly sliced
1 bunch spring onions, thinly sliced
Juice of half a lemon
200g grated cheddar cheese
1 large packet Kettle chips or vegetable crisps
Mix the fromage frais, mayonnaise, celery, spring
onions and half of the cheese in a bowl. Stir in the chicken and
lemon juice, season with salt and pepper and spoon into an oven
proof dish. Crush the kettle chips and sprinkle over the chips
and the remaining cheese. Bake for 30 minutes 180c until browned
and hot all the way through. Serve hot or cold delicious!
Top Tip: To keep yourself cool at the Game Fair,
put a plastic bottle of water in the freezer the night before
– tip out a little water so that there is a gap at the top of
about 5-8cm before freezing the bottle. The frozen water will
melt throughout the day keeping the water cool – good for dog
bowls too!
